The Salty Dawg Sailing Association announced recently that the association has developed a useful and feature-rich app for use on both iPhone and Android smart phones. The app can be downloaded on the Play and Apple stores, but you have to be a member of the SDSA to log on and use the tools.
The new app has many functions that will be useful to both those out cruising and those who want to stay up-to-date on what’s going on with the association. Members can post to the whole membership as you would on Facebook and other social media.
Or, you can use the Messaging function to create or join groups, invite others to join the group and then have messages targeted to those members. This is particularly useful during rallies but also will be fun for boats hanging around one area for a while to maintain their local community.
The feature that looks like a lot of fun is the member locator map. When you sail into a new harbor, you can check out all of the member’s boats nearby. If you see a boat you want to get together with, tap of the icon and a screen will open that allows you to call or message them.
We are in Newport, Rhode Island. When I log onto the app and hit the Member Map icon, a map pops up and shows me that there are 18 Salty Dawg boats in the harbor right now. Some of them will be joining the fall rally that starts on November 1.
The app connects members to all of the association’s activities including the rallies, events, the member directory, educational opportunities, the store and a way to step up to volunteer.
If you want to be part of a cruising community that now has more than 1,000 members and that will be sending more than 100 boats to the Caribbean and Bahamas in the 2024 fall rallies, the new app is a great way to say connected.
