Many thanks for all who sent in answers to last week’s question on the meaning of SOLAS on flares. Our winner this week in Tony Smith,m Palm Beach, Florida who emailed: “SOLAS stands for the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Today, sanctioned by the IMO (International Maritime Organization of the United Nations). This was first formulated in 1914 as a result of the Titanic disaster. Sadly, those who actually saw the distress rockets fired that night thought that someone was having a party and these were just fireworks. Several updates have occurred over the years. All distress pyrotechnics, rockets, flares, smoke signals etc., must meet the rigorous SOLAS standards.”
