The winner this week is Carl Davies, Milwaukee, WI who emailed: “West is Best and East is Least is a mnemonic device to remember whether to add or subtract magnetic variation when apply a magnetic course to a chart. When the variation is west then best means to add the degrees while when the variation is east you subtract the degrees. This applies to navigation with paper chart. Chart plotters do this for us, we hope.”
