In last week’s Cruising Compass, we ran a story about Sail Cargo, a Costa Rican company that delivers coffee beans from Colombia to the U.S. in a vintage sailing ship. Well, it turns out they are not alone.
Late last week, the French shipping company TOWT’s first modern sailing cargo ship set sail from Le Harve, France on its maiden voyage to New York loaded with 1,000 tonnes of cargo. The company reports that the Anemos, which is the Greek word for wind, is making good time in favorable conditions.
Anemos is the first of eight sisterships that will be built for TOWT as they embrace the trend to reduce and ultimately eliminate their ships’ carbon emissions. The company plans to serve markets in South America and the Caribbean in partnership with European coffee producers Belco and Café William.
The French congac and champagne producer Martel, Mumm, Perrier and Jouet plans to use the sailing cargo ships for exports to the U.S. The shipper claims that spirits delivered transatlantic under sail in their own casks have enhanced aging properties. Read more.
