The Moorings announced this week that the charter company has opened a new base in La Paz, Mexico. La Paz lies on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula just north of Cabo San Lucas. It faces the Sea of Cortez, which is famous for its abundance of both sea and bird life.
La Paz is itself a charming Mexican town with plenty of attractions and festivals. The cruising in the Sea of Cortez can be called remote since there are few marine facilities where you can stop to plug the boat in and reprovision.
That being the case, the Mooting 403 PC power and 4500 sailing cats that make up the fleet are equipped with extra solar panels, water makers and water purifiers to ensure that charters can be self-sufficient away from the base.
Chartering in the Sea of Cortez offers balmy weather, moderate breezes and plenty of beautiful and secure anchorages. The rugged landscapes ashore provide an amazingly scenic backdrop and plenty of hiking opportunities.
The islands are home to flocks of exotic bird life that include rookeries for blue herons and white egrets. Bring your binoculars for some excellent bird watching.
Below the water, snorkeling and SCUBA diving open up a wondrous world of marine life and corals. You may have the chance to swim with whale sharks –not dangerous—sea lions, octopus and 800 more species.
The Sea of Cortez is a 12-month destination, and each season has something special to offer. If you are up for the adventure of a lifetime, a week aboard a Moorings cat sailing or powering out of La Paz will fit the bill.
