This is a bit of a plug for an ASA summer program for teens but we know the program well and think many parents will see the value of sending their emerging young on a real skill and character building sailing adventure.
Based in the BVI, the program runs in one and two-week sessions aboard full-size cruising catamarans. The boats are captained by experienced instructors who turn the running of the boats over to the students, with mindful guidance.
The ability to manage a 42-foot cat, to trim the sails, maintain the engines, set the anchor and more all build self-reliance and self-esteem.
Plus, the courses offer SCUBA instruction, turtle tagging, reef maintenance and more. Teens who have never experienced this side of life, come away amazed. Sailing kids will find their horizons broadened and their seamanship skills refined.
