Many thanks to all readers who answered last week’s question on the origin of the name El Nino. The winner this week is Peter Beluski, Carmel, CA, who emailed: “The name for the weather phenomenon known as El Nino came from South America fishermen in Ecuador and Peru who noticed the appearance annually around Christmas time of a warm current flowing contrary to the north-flowing Humbolt Current that aided their passages south. El Nino is “the boy child” and a name for the baby Jesus.”
