(bbc.com) – Contrary to popular belief as to how the patch looks, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch has no surface to walk on and it cannot be viewed from space. Rather, the patch makes the ocean look like a murky soup, made up of different sized plastics.
Scientists are concerned that misconceptions can dampen the urgency to treat garbage patches. Since garbage patches accumulate in the ocean beyond territorial waters, few governments are willing to take responsibility for them, and so the patches are growing. Read more.
