gCaptain.com takes a look through the past few years at a number of incidents involving the transportation of new and used cars on roll-on/roll-off ships. Just last week a car carrier, Fremantle Highway, caught fire after leaving Germany on a trip to Port Said, Egypt. There were close to 4,000 cars aboard of which nearly 500 were electric vehicles. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined but gCaptain notes, “With the growing popularity of electric vehicles, it will be interesting to see how or if rules and regulations evolve to meet new challenges associated with transporting them by ship”.
