This week, the sun reaches its northern most position relative to the earth, which marks the summer solstice and the unofficial start to the Northern Hemisphere’s summer sailing season. In celebration, a lot of sailors and sailboat owners do something special by inviting friends to join them in a day of sharing the joy of sailing. This tradition is mostly unorganized, but one group, Summer Sailstice, offers a web portal that encourages summer solstice sailors to get together and make a party of it. Founded by Latitude 38 publisher John Arndt, Summer Sailstice has become an international event that awards prizes for photos of the biggest raft up, the best video and the best photos. Summer Sailstice will be held on June 24th but lots of sailors will get together in the days beforehand to enjoy a long weekend of celebrations. So, call your sailing friends and invite a few non-sailors and get into the swing of this weekend. It’s all about celebrating sailing and having fun together. Check out Summer Sailstice here.
