The Salty Dawg Sailing Association has a lot on its 2018 calendar for cruiser in the Caribbean and along the East Coast. The association is an all volunteer 501c3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing seminars, events and rallies that promote the best seamanship practices in a low key and fun way. The rallies are not competitive and provide a fun way for cruisers to head offshore in company and with the aid of daily check-ins, weather forecasting and routing provided by Chris Parker.
The SDSA is a membership organization that is run both by and for its members. The SDSA keeps an active crew list so skippers seeking extra hands for an offshore passage will be able to connect with like-minded sailors. Rendezvous are arranged by volunteers around the start of the major rallies and on the Wednesday before the Annapolis sailboat show every year. These events are open to all cruisers and are a great way for those interested in blue water sailing to learn more about what the SDSA can do for them.
This year the SDSA will run a Spring Rally from Antigua to the East Coast, a Chesapeake to Maine Rally with a stop in Newport, RI. At the end of the Maine Rally, a Nova Scotia Rally will take the fleet all the way to the Bras d’Or Lakes. The Fall Rally to the Caribbean is the association’s big event and usually hosts more than 70 boats for the 1350 mile run from Hampton, VA to the Caribbean. This year, there will also be a New England start for the Fall Rally out of Essex. CT.
