Congratulations to James Skok of Sebastian, FL, who gave the correct answer too last week’s questions. “The answer is the SOUTHERN CROSS, but the actual star that is closest (within 1 degree ) of the South Pole is Sigma Octans. Its light , however, is very faint compared to others. A better way to find the pole uses the constellation Crux (proper name of the Southern Cross) and the two brightest stars in Centaurus, Rigil Kent and Hadar. These stars are sometimes called the “Southern Pointers”.
