Pam Wall will be presenting at a two day event with Lee Chesneau, John Rousmaniere, and Frank Bohlen just after the Annapolis Boat Show in the Fall.
The two day event will be held at MITAGS near the BWI airport and will be two days of intertwining the necessities for cruising yachtsmen to understand how the weather (Lee Chesneau) interacts with the sea conditions, tides currents etc. (Frank Bohlen) and the safety of the way vessels are handled and the safety equipment aboard (John Rousmaniere) and the equipment that sailboats should have aboard to ensure the comfort and safe sailing in all conditions (Pam Wall).
This event was presented last May with the attendees coming away with something different than any other seminar event, the relationship of these four critical factors in keeping our cruising community well informed on intertwining the four vital elements, weather, currents and tides, safety sailing tactics and equipment, and outfitting for safer and more comfortable sailing.
Overview of the two day “Seamanship, Oceanography, Weather, & Boat Outfitting” Symposium
This two-day program will combine lecture and offer four (4) separate breakout-rooms for more detail & hands on reinforcement exercises into the complex issues involving seamanship, oceanography, weather & boat outfitting.
John Rousmaniere
Preventing crew overboard accidents — and making rescues
- How boats and sailors get into trouble
- Lessons from recent accidents
- Heavy weather sailing
- The Seamanship ethos
Pam Wall
Proper Equipment to have aboard a well found yacht above and below deck:
Pam discusses the important equipment to consider having aboard to deal with the weather, the sea state, your personal safety and well-being, & to have aboard a well found vessel. From the bow to the stern, there will be information on the correct and seamanlike equipment needed aboard your boat. In each break out session with Pam Wall, you will go into great detail about: *Ground Tackle
- Rigging
- Downwind Sailing
- Safety Equipment
- Comfort Products
- Sun Protection
- Tender
- Items that make life aboard and cruising more efficient, safe, and comfortable during smooth sailing & bad weather conditions, large seas, swift currents, & storm situations.
Frank Bohlen
Basic Oceanographic Fundamentals
- Ocean circulation systems (e.g. Gulf Stream & other known “Western Boundary Currents”).
- Wind & wave interactions.
- Boaters resources.
Lee Chesneau
Marine Weather Fundamentals
- A critical discussion of the marine advisory, watch, & warning system of the US National Weather Service (NWS) & Environment Canada.(from Small Craft Advisories (NWS) & High Wind Warnings (Environment Canada), to Gale, Storm, & Hurricane Force Warnings).
- Tying in the three core synoptic scale charts as generated from the NWS’s Ocean Prediction Center: Surface Pressure, Upper Air 500 mb, & Wind & Wave Analyses & Forecast Products).
- Break-out sessions will exercise the key components of synoptic scale chart symbols from upper air & surface wind plots, to fronts, troughs, & squall lines (as well as the associated clouds and weather forecast conditions & expectations).
