For the first time in many years, American cruising boats have reached Cuba – legally! A Cuba travel organization and an American yacht club arranged for a group of participants of the annual Bone Island Regatta to add a leg from Key West to Havana this year. The regatta is open to cruising sailboats only.
Regatta participants started out May 13 from Sarasota, Naples and Tampa to finish in Key West. Just days later, the Sarasota Yacht Club received approval for participants to sail into Havana. The yacht club has tried in past years to get approval for a regatta to Cuba, but could not get the required permission from the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Asset Control. Read More
