The National Yacht Club and the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company will host Race For Water, FONCIA, Groupe Edmond de Rothschild, Spindrift Racing and Musandam Oman Sail.

A five-day family festival will be held on the East Pier to celebrate the arrival of the trimarans. The festival will include, food courts, a farmers market, fair trade and craft stalls, street entertainers and vintage amusements.

From Friday, September 7 – Saturday, September 8, the MOD70s will be competing in the Dublin City Race and in the Speed Match Races, which is held in Dublin Bay.

The trimarans will leave Dun Laoghaire at 3 p.m. for the start of the second leg of the European Tour from Dun Laoghaire to Cascais.

Gerry Dunne, CEO of Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company stated: ‘We are delighted to welcome the world’s most innovative trimarans to Dun Laoghaire Harbor, which has witnessed 200 years of maritime history. 1.4 million people walk the East Pier on an annual basis and we hope that the hosting of this global event will attract many more people to our beautiful harbor in September.”

The high-speed MOD70 class of trimarans is a new innovation for sailing. Each MOD70 is completely identical, built from the same moulds, so that success, inshore and offshore reflects the skills of the sailing crew and not any technological advantage.

Paul Barrington, Commodore of the National Yacht Club stated: “The National Yacht Club has played host to many world championships and in July we co-hosted the ISAF Youth World Championships. We are delighted that the MOD70s have chosen Dun Laoghaire to host a stopover on the European Tour and we look forward to thousands of people visiting Dun Laoghaire to enjoy the spectacle.”

The MOD70 European Tour starts in Kiel, Germany, then moves on to Dublin, then to Cascais by Lisbon, Portugal and to Marseille, France. The tour will finally finish in Genoa, Italy.

Over five weeks, the MOD70 European Tour teams will sail nearly 5000 miles over five offshore stages.

Already, the MOD70 fleet has attracted a cross section of some of the best ocean racing sailors in the world. Michel Desjoyeaux (FRA) has twice won the Vendée Globe solo round the world race and skippers FONCIA.

Berman Launches Balance 421 Catamaran Wed, 08 Aug 2012 14:29:14 +0000 vita Continue reading ]]> Phil Berman, longtime sailor, owner and founder of The Multihull Company, has launched his own line of catamarans aimed at the performance sailing market. Dubbed the Balance 421, Berman has teamed with Kiwi catamaran master designer Roger Hill in the redesign of one of Roger’s well-proven hull designs to produce the first in a full range of Balance Catamarans.

“I am calling it Balance Catamarans because our team of designers, engineers and builders are hard focused on achieving a perfect harmony between comfort at anchor and safety and performance underway,” said Berman. “At Balance Catamarans we will not produce charter cats or racing cats but rather blue-water voyagers of uncompromising quality. We know that the demands of the sea have not changed since the days of the early Polynesian catamaran explorers and that ultimately our boats must be designed and built to cope with the worst weather nature can deliver.”

The boats will be marketed and sold exclusively by The Multihull Company around the globe.

Hill and Berman painstakingly analyzed every aspect of the Hill design down to the tiniest detail, test-sailed a protype in Australia, then refined the design again and again to achieve the perfect balance between performance and comfort. Then, they turned to a seasoned composite builder they both knew and respected – Lee Zinxiang.  Zinxiang, while managing production for ArrowCat Marine in China, successfully built over 50 Hill-designed power catamarans at his composite engineering factory in Juhai, China. The team was rounded out by the addition of Micah Zimmerman who has founded a range of companies in China over the past 15 years, including ArrowCat Marine.

Hill has been drawing boats for just over 34 years. Starting out his working life as an Architectural draughtsman and then being asked to join the office of Bruce Farr in Auckland. After these initial projects Hill tackled an interesting variety of work including mono hull and catamarans, power and sail, steel, alloy, wood, and composite construction.

“I am certain you will agree that the Balance 421 is the most harmonious and carefully thought out live-aboard voyaging catamaran to come to market in years,” said Berman.

The Balance 421 will be available early in 2013. A Balance 451 is already in the tooling stage and will be launched in the spring of 2013.

Pre-show orders are now being accepted. Please contact The Multihull Company via telephone, 215-508-2704 or visit their website for further information.

Solar-Powered Catamaran Sets Sail on Global Journey Wed, 01 Aug 2012 15:25:14 +0000 vita Continue reading ]]> Cheaper, more efficient and more powerful than ever before, global consumers are turning to solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to provide clean, renewable, local electrical power for their homes.

Adding significantly to the growing portion of America’s electricity generated from solar energy is power utilities, more and more of which are getting involved with U.S. solar energy markets. Though gains have been sluggish, substantial progress is being made in terms of weaning U.S. vehicles, cycles, planes and maritime vessels off of petroleum fuels.

And that is exactly what New Zealand native and designer of the catamaran Planet Solar Chris Loomes has not only envisioned, but achieved.

According to the website, “PlanetSolar is a catamaran that runs solely on energy found in light. The additional removable parts allow it to expose a total of 537 m2 of photovoltaic surface (solar panels) to the sun. This data makes it the biggest solar run ship in the world.”

Pretty impressive! For more details surrounding the catamaran’s world tour, visit the boat’s website or blog.

The World’s Largest Sailing Tri…Equipped with a Sports Car? Tue, 31 Jul 2012 16:00:44 +0000 vita Continue reading ]]> For sailors who cannot live without their sports car, the 157-foot UltraLuxum CXL Trimaran was a big draw at the Monaco Yacht Show.

The UltraLuxum CXL, which is the world’s largest sailing trimaran, has outer hulls that fold in for harbor access. The vessel is a stable platform at sea thanks to its impressive beam (the CXL is 75 feet across), but it can be transformed to “just” 36 feet in a matter of minutes, allowing access to a greater range of harbors and marinas.

UltraLuxum signed a partnership with McLaren Applied Technologies back in May in order to fabricate the technology of its retractable beams. The UltraLuxum CXL comes equipped with a McLaren MP4, which will be housed in a dedicated garage and visible from the owner’s cabin through a wall of glass.

Arabic Yacht Makes History Crossing the Atlantic Wed, 18 Jul 2012 16:42:04 +0000 vita Continue reading ]]> Omani sailors have earned a place in the history books as the first Arabic yacht to cross the Atlantic Ocean during the KRYS Ocean Race.

The KRYS Ocean Race, which features several of the world’s fastest multihull yachts, set sail in New York City on Saturday, July 7th and finished in a little under a week in Brest, France. The crew of the 70-foot trimaran Musandam-Oman Sail managed to take the lead early on, holding their position at the front of the fleet throughout the first day of racing. But unfortunately, bad luck struck and one of the sailboat’s foils spontaneously snapped off. For the remainder of the race, the yacht sailed at only 70% of its performance capacity.

Despite this setback, Omani finished in fourth place, having crossed the Atlantic within five days.
