At around 4 p.m. Wednesday, August 28th U.S. Marshals arrested Robert Van Gundy, a fugitive from Arizona. Van Gundy is wanted on a warrant after failing to appear in an Arizona court. He was wanted on 16 counts of sexual contact with a minor and luring a minor for sexual exploitation. When he failed to appear in court, a warrant was issued for his whereabouts.
Van Gundy was arrested at Dinner Key Marina with his wife, Arielle. She was arrested for having a concealed weapon without a permit. “We snuck up behind them, basically surprised them and they had no idea we where there and arrested him without incident,” said U.S. Marshals Service Deputy Barry Golden.
The pair had been staying at the Chesapeake Motel in Hialeah for the last month while they got their sailboat ready for their trip. They purchased the sailboat (pictured above) on July 31 for $4,000. Boaters said they seemed like a pleasant couple and recalled seeing them with their three dogs as they made several trips a day to their sailboat. “They’ve been loading up a lot of junk on their boat,” said boater Brian Morgan.
On the vessel Golden said they found a heavy stock of weapons and ammunition. “He made statements that he would not be taken alive, so when you have someone who’s making that kind of statements and you have fire arms involved, its a huge concerned for safety with law enforcement,” said Golden.
Through social media, authorities got a lead that Van Gundy had an anti-government sentiment and hatred for law enforcement.
Van Gundy was stockpiling weapons to flee to the Bahamas. On a blog about sailing he posted: “I want to cruise to the Bahamas [and maybe farther]. I would like to sail from Biscayne to Bimini. I will freely admit that the Gulf Stream crossing scares the crap out of me. I am not from this area [Miami, FL] so I don’t know anyone. I’m from desert and in a strange land”
Information out of Arizona indicated he had purchased numerous firearms and ammunition.
