D.C. Police Boat Crashes Into Pleasure Boats; One Starts Sinking

A police boat slammed into two docked pleasure boats on Saturday, nearly sinking one of them.

A video released over the weekend shows a Washington D.C. Harbor Police boat — with lights and sirens blaring — failing to maneuver a U-turn away from the unoccupied pleasure boats. The officers slammed into one and scraped the other as terrified witnesses looked on, WUSA9 reports.

The pleasure boat that took the brunt of the damage began to sink as water filled a large gash in its hull. Shawn Kuykendall says he was borrowing the boat to take his friends out, but arrived to find it halfway underwater.

“No pun intended, but immediately my heart sank,” he told the station. “It’s not the call you want to make: ‘Sorry, your boat is sinking.’”

Officers left in a hurry, and later said that they were responding to an emergency call, CNN reports. In a video taken by a witness, a boat cop asked one of the owners, “Are you injured? OK, then relax.”

Luckily for Kuykendall, the loaned boat’s owner shrugged off the collision.

“It’s not his fault,” Sheri Saunders told WUSA9. “We’re glad he wasn’t on it.”

Crews eventually towed Saunders’ boat away. The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the crash, WTVR reports.
