Thanks to last week’s Mindbender winner, Fred Edmiston, for his answer to “In reference to a ship’s compass, what does “deviation” mean?”: deviation is the deflection of the ships compass (positively or negatively) due to shipboard metallic objects or electronics and varies with the ships heading.
Deviation is often confused with variation, which is the different between true and magnetic north and can be found on the inside of a compass rose on a nautical chart.
