When performing a diesel engine inspection prior to starting, what are a minimum of three things to check?

Send your answer to cruisingcompass@bwsailing.com. A winner, who will receive a Blue Water Sailing hat, will be selected at random from the correct answers.

Thanks to last week’s Mindbender winner, Christina Bartlett, for her answer to “When sailing a boat equipped with an adjustable backstay, how would tensioning the stay affect the mainsail?”: tightening the backstay on a fractional rig will bend the mast and de-power the mainsail by slightly twisting it open and flattening the top two-thirds of the sail.
