Dag Rorslett had it covered. His Motiva 49, a 26 ton steel boat, was on day five of the 2012 ARC – crossing the Atlantic. The weather was heavy with winds of 25 to 40 knots and seas of 13 to 26 feet. Then his rudder simply dropped out – gone!
Fortunately, a Hydrovane windvane had been installed just before his departure. The Hydrovane doubles as an emergency steering system and as Dag reported: “…without it we might have ended up on the shores of Senegal.”
