Three Boats Destroyed by Fire at Liberty Harbor Yacht Club in New Jersey

Three “pleasure crafts” went up in flames Monday morning at the Liberty Harbor Yacht Club marina. The three boats caught fire some time between 7 and 7:30 a.m., North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Chief Frank Montagne said.

By the time firefighters arrived at the marina, located near the Chart House restaurant off Harbor Boulevard, heavy smoke extended “several hundred feet in the air,” Montagne said.

Gusty winds added to the spread of the blaze, but firefighters were able to contain it to the three boats, he said.

Two of the boats were burned right to the water line and the third was totaled as well, Montange said.

Winds, low tide and the distance from land made it tough for hoses to reach the fire, he added. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No one was on board any of the boats when the fire started and there were no injuries, Montagne said.

Bill Wheatley of Wilmington, Del., the owner of a 27-foot cabin cruiser he calls Tweet’s Retreat, was at the dock yesterday morning.

Wheatley, who works in the area and stays overnight on his boat three or four times a week, said he was on his way to his job from Delaware when he received a call from the marina around 8 a.m.

“Boats can be replaced, what’s more important is that no one was hurt,” Wheatley said.
