The International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) in Newport, RI has just launched its graduating class of 2012, and when we say launched, we mean they really launched them. Unlike many institutions which restore and then display significant historic vessels, IYRS uses the boats it restores. “Preservation through use,” is the institution’s philosophy, as is exhibited at their annual Graduation and Launch Day ceremonies in which students launch and sail or run their commissioned restorations. These restored boats then become available to the public to purchase. At the moment the school is offering several fully restored Beetle Cats complete with sails as well as a fully restored Maine Lobster Boat. All of the proceeds from the sales of these boats goes back into school programs so you get to enjoy a part of boating history while also giving back to a great program. For more information on these boats and the school’s programs, go to www.iyrs.org.
