IMBC Names Top Three Marinas

Looking for the best marinas in the U.S.? Three marinas were recognized for excellence at the International Marina & Boatyard Conference in Orlando, FL last week.

Bridge Marina on Lake Hopatcong, NJ, was named ValvTect Marina of the Year. The 99-slip, third-generation family marina was cited for its efforts to grow boating, clean the environment and support its community.

The marina was designated New Jersey’s first freshwater Clean Marina. It recently installed a wastewater treatment facility, sponsors lake cleanups and started a bilge-cleaning program for its slipholders to protect the lake, marina president Ray Fernandez said.

The marina operates a Freedom Boat Club rental business and has been giving 5 cents from each gallon of fuel it sells to the United Way. The marina plans to start directing that money toward lake improvements.

NestEgg Marine, a 70-wet-slip marina in Marinette, WI, won Marina Dock Age’s 2012 small-marina award. Owned by Jon and Sue Kukuk, the 20-year-old marina on Green Bay is a Clean Marina, a full-service yard, a Catalina sailboat and Mercury engine dealership and has “the best-stocked ship store in the region,” Jon Kukuk said.

Kukuk, chairman of the Wisconsin Marina Association, said NestEgg has adapted big-business management practices to a small marina and created a “one-stop boating center.”

The 200-wet slip, 300 dry-slip Sunset Marina in Ocean City, MD, won Marina Dock Age’s 2012 big-marina award. The marina resort has a marina, boatyard, ship store, restaurant and bar. It sponsors fishing tournaments and hosts a large charter fishing fleet.
