Our first thoughts when watching this were that it was so unrealistic, but then we realized that the polo shirts, cocktails, snorkeling, sunsets, and piling all your friends onto a boat is not really that far off from what so many of us love about sailing. Most of us just don’t break out into song and dance while doing it.
Sailing is not about singing or dancing or cocktails. It is about being on the water with a responsible boat underneath me, with the water spraying me and the sun beating down on me. It is about being one with the vessel and skimming over slick, blue water. All the rest? Just noise.
I believe sailing IS about singing, dancing and cocktails. As well as being one with the sea and at peace with your spirit. Too much emphasis is put on the “proper” way to sail. You can be safe, responsible and still have fun. You don’t have to follow the path of a bunch of stuffy mariners that forgot that sailing is about freedom.
