Abu Dhabi Out; PUMA in the Lead

The Volvo Ocean Race has had no shortage of drama in the less than two weeks since it’s started. When we checked in with them last week, Team Sanya was out of Leg 1 with major hull damage and shipping the boat to Cape Town, South Africa for repairs and a shot at the Cape Town in-port racing while Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing was about to set out for the second time after replacing their mast.

Now Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing has bowed out of Leg 1 after determining they just wouldn’t be able to make it to Cape Town in time for the in-port racing and a fresh start for Leg 2.

Meanwhile, the four boats who have been racing are playing a bit of cat and mouse with the leaders continuously changing. But as of Wednesday night, PUMA Ocean Racing was the first boat across the equator and had a lead of about 14 nm over Telefonica with Camper about 150 nm back, and Groupama nearly 400 nm from first place.
