Sarasota-Havana Race Canceled

It looked like it was really going to happen this year, but once again the Sarasota to Havana race has been canceled. The regatta has not been held since 1994. Over 184 boats had signed up for the regatta, which was to be held this May. However, the U.S. Treasury Department did not provide the Sarasota Yacht Club with the permits required to travel to Cuba by last Tuesday’s deadline.

Until the last few weeks, organizers were hopeful they would get approval, but then the communication stopped, said Don Payzant, president of the SYC Foundation.

“I’ve called them, and I’ve faxed them, and I haven’t heard anything,” he said.

The club is still exploring the possibility of hosting a smaller race of 70 boats from Key West to Havana.
